The question I hear at least once a week: "should I get a lash lift or extensions?" And my honest first answer is always the same: it depends on your lashes, your routine, and how much time you want to spend thinking about them.
Both services make your lashes look more open, longer and more defined. But a lift works with the lashes you already have, while extensions add to them. That difference shapes everything, the result, the upkeep, the cost and what your mornings look like for the next several weeks. Let me walk you through both, plainly.
The 30-second answer
If you only read one section, make it this one.
- Lash lift curls and lifts your own natural lashes using a chemical process, like a perm but for lashes. No added fibres, no fills, no daily upkeep. You wake up with lifted lashes for six to eight weeks and carry on with your usual routine.
- Lash extensions add individual synthetic fibres to each of your natural lashes, one by one, to create more length, volume and drama. The look is fuller and more customisable, but requires fills every three to four weeks and a little more care day to day.
If you want something simple, low-maintenance and budget-friendly, a lash lift is almost certainly your answer. If you want a more dramatic, made-up look around the clock and you do not mind the upkeep, extensions might be the right call.
What a lash lift is
A lash lift is a semi-permanent curl treatment applied to your own lashes. A small silicone rod is placed along your lash line and your lashes are lifted onto it with a gentle adhesive, then a lifting solution is applied to reshape the bond inside each hair. The result is a natural, wide-eyed look that lasts until your lashes grow out and shed, usually six to eight weeks.
- Completely zero daily maintenance. After the first 24 hours of keeping them dry, you carry on with your life. Mascara, eyeliner, eye makeup remover, all fine.
- Works on almost everyone. Whether your lashes are short, straight, sparse or pointing downward, a lift opens the eye dramatically.
- Pairs beautifully with a tint. Adding a lash tint at the same appointment darkens the lashes so they look defined even without mascara. Most clients get the combo.
A lash lift is the thing that makes people say "your lashes are amazing" rather than "are those extensions?"
Larissa, Aura Beauty AtelierWhat lash extensions are
Lash extensions are individual synthetic fibres bonded one by one to each of your natural lashes using a medical-grade adhesive. The process takes a couple of hours for a full set and the result can range from a barely-there natural look to full, bold glamour.
At Aura Beauty Atelier I offer two styles:
- Classic extensions. One extension applied to each natural lash. A defined, mascara-effect look with added length. The most natural option in extensions.
- Hybrid extensions. A mix of classic singles and light fans, creating more volume and texture than classic while staying softer than a full volume set. The most popular style.
Extensions are the right choice when you want a genuinely made-up look without any effort in the morning. The trade-off is that they shed with your natural lashes, so fills are needed every three to four weeks.
The best answer starts with looking at your actual lashes.

Here is how the two compare across the things that matter most. Notice that a lash lift costs significantly less and demands far less time, but extensions give you more control over the final look.

Who suits which
Choose a lash lift if…
- You want low maintenance above all. A lift fits seamlessly into any routine, gym, swimming, contact lenses, busy mornings, no adjustments needed.
- Your lashes are naturally long but straight or downward-pointing. A lift reveals length you already have. The transformation can be stunning.
- You love wearing mascara. A lift gives you the perfect curled base to apply mascara to, making it look better than any curler ever did.
- You want to try something before committing to extensions. Lower risk, lower cost, and a great first step.
Choose lash extensions if…
- You want to skip mascara entirely. Extensions give you a made-up look the moment you open your eyes, with no products needed.
- You want more volume, not just curl. If your lashes are sparse or fine and you want real fullness, extensions add what a lift cannot.
- You are comfortable with a routine around them. Extensions ask for gentle cleansing and avoiding oil-based products near the eyes. If that fits your lifestyle, the payoff is worth it.
- You have a specific event coming up. Extensions for a wedding, photoshoot or holiday, a beautiful look with nothing to think about on the day.
Neither is better than the other. A lash lift is the smarter choice for most people most of the time, lower cost, zero upkeep, works with your life. Extensions are the right choice when you want more drama and you are ready to maintain them.
Upkeep and aftercare
After a lash lift
For the first 24 hours, keep your lashes dry and avoid steam, swimming and anything that creates heat or moisture around the eyes. After that, there are no restrictions. Wash your face normally, wear eye makeup, use your usual skincare. The curl simply relaxes gradually over six to eight weeks as your lashes grow and shed naturally.
After lash extensions
The first 24 to 48 hours are the same, keep them dry while the adhesive fully cures. After that, gentle daily cleansing of the lash line is actually important. Avoid oil-based makeup removers and eye creams near the lash line, since oil breaks down the adhesive bond. Come in for fills every three to four weeks, waiting longer means the set looks patchy.
Cost and how long they last in Etobicoke
At Aura Beauty Atelier, a lash lift is $75 and the lash lift and tint combo is $85, the combo is what most clients choose, since the tint darkens the lashes so they look defined even without mascara. Both last six to eight weeks.
Classic lash extensions start at $130 for a full set, with hybrid extensions at $150. Fill appointments are available for existing extension clients. You can see the full service menu on the lashes page.
How to actually choose
- How much time do I want to spend on this? If the answer is "as little as possible," a lash lift is your service. If you do not mind regular fills, extensions could be worth it.
- Do I want more volume or just more lift and curl? If your lashes are decent in number, a lift. If you want noticeably fuller lashes, extensions.
- What is my budget over time? Lifts are more economical across the year. Extensions are a larger ongoing investment.
- What is the occasion? For everyday life, a lift. For a wedding or photoshoot, extensions.
And if you want someone to look at your actual lashes and just tell you which one makes sense, that is exactly what a free consultation is for.
